Did you know that undiagnosed thyroid deficiency is prevalent in people over age 40?
Although thyroid function commonly slows as part of the natural aging of the endocrine system, thyroid deficiency is commonly missed by conventional doctors. An undiagnosed thyroid deficiency can dramatically increase your risk of heart disease obesity, anxiety, depression, hair loss, and sexual dysfunction. That’s why it is important that you don’t go undiagnosed.
Thyroid function screening at Body Beautiful Spa is simple.
Once one of our doctors determines that symptoms of thyroid deficiency exist, a lab order is issued for a simple blood test to determine the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), thyroxine (T4), and triiodothyronine levels. When the lab results are received, we’ll schedule a follow up appointment with your doctor.
About Your Thyroid
Even small declines in your thyroid gland’s output can have profound health consequences. The thyroxin hormone your thyroid produces helps to regulate virtually every single cell in the body. This includes cells your heart, kidney, brain, liver, skin and bones. If your thyroid produces no hormone, you would die rather quickly.
Your thyroid is critical because thyroid hormones regulate cell metabolism, which includes cell oxygen consumption. If your body’s cellular metabolism drops too low, widespread cell dysfunction occurs. This cell dysfunction can cause learning impairment, memory loss, weight gain, loss of muscle tone, anxiety, depression, hearing impairment, and heart disease.
Symptoms of Thyroid Deficiency
People who are thyroid deficient, depending on the magnitude of their deficiency, will have one or more of the following symptoms in varying degrees:
- Weight gain
- Increased difficulty losing weight
- Dry, rough pale skin
- Hair loss
- Coarse, dry hair
- Intolerance to cold
- Decreased libido
- Memory loss
- Muscle cramps and/or frequent muscle aches
- Abnormal menstrual cycles
Treating Thyroid Deficiency
The only way to effectively treat a thyroid deficiency, or hypothyroidism, is with thyroid supplements.
While vitamin and herbal supplements can help support your overall wellness, they cannot remedy an underactive thyroid. If you are hypothyroid, it is important to refrain from eating foods that decrease thyroid function, such as any member of cabbage family, almonds, cashews, peanuts, and soy products. However, simply abstaining from these foods will not remedy an underactive thyroid.
There are basically two types of thyroid supplements; levothyroxine sodium (a synthetic T4), and desiccated thyroid combination thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). Body Beautiful Spa carries WP Thyroid, which is thought to result in a more effective body response than synthetic thyroid. WP Thyroid is a prescription that does require doctors orders to be dispensed.
